Lun Shan

Shan Lun, researcher, honorary member of Plant Physiology Society of China. He graduated from Shandong Agricultural College in 1954 and received his associate degree in biology from the Institute of Plant Physiology of the Former Soviet Union Academy of Sciences in 1962. He used to be the Deputy Director of Northwest Institute of Water and Soil Conservation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and now he is the Director and researcher of the academic committee of the institute, the Consultant of Decision-Making Advisory Committee of Shaanxi Province, the member of science and Technology Committee of Ministry of Water Resources, the Vice Chairman of degree Committee of Northwest A&F University, the double appointed academician of Henan University, and the honorary President of College of Life Science. He served as a deputy to the ninth National People's Congress. He was elected academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

Shan Lun is an academic leader in the field of dryland agriculture in China. He has been devoted to the research of crop drought resistance physiology and dryland agriculture for a long time, and has opened up the field of physiology and ecology of dryland agriculture research. He has made systematic researches on the comprehensive technical approaches to improve the precipitation efficiency of farmland in semi-arid areas, the physiological and ecological basis for the efficient utilization of limited water, the mechanism of drought resistance of different crops, the mechanism of seedling formation in adverse conditions and the regulation, which has achieved a number of important achievements and produced remarkable economic and social benefits. Now he devotes himself to the research on the drought-resistance of plants as a whole, the biology of water-saving agriculture and the strategy of agricultural development in the semi-arid region centered on the Loess Plateau in China.

Professor Shan has won 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 9 awards of Chinese Academy of Sciences and provincial (district) Science and Technology Progress Awards, published more than 300 academic papers, edited 4 monographs, and trained more than 30 doctoral and postgraduate students. In 1988 he was awarded the Zhu Kezhen Prize for field Science work by The Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1991 he was awarded the title of expert with outstanding contributions of Shaanxi Province. In 1998 he was elected a deputy to the ninth National People’s Congress and in 2001 he was awarded the He Liang and He Li Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress.
