Sun Jiulin, male, is an academician. He was born in Shanghai in August 1937 and was originally from Yancheng County, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Xi’an Jiaotong University with a bachelor's degree in 1964.He used to be the deputy director, researcher and doctoral supervisor of natural Resources Comprehensive Investigation Committee of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is now the honorary President, professor and doctoral supervisor of the College of Environment and Planning, Henan University. He is also a researcher at the Innovation Base of the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a famous expert in agriculture, Resource and environment information engineering. Professor Sun is also director of the China Centre for Renewable Resources and Environment at the World Data Centre, member of the ICSU World Data Centre Executive Board, executive director of The Chinese Society of Natural Resources, deputy director of the Resource Information Committee, deputy director of expert Committee of Scientific Database and Information System of Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of China Association of Geographic Information Systems, editorial board member of the Journal of Resource Science.
His research interests include earth information science, geographic information systems, remote sensing, global positioning system applications, virtual geographic environments, and information-based agriculture.
In the 1980s, Professor Sun served as an adjunct professor in the School of Environment and Planning (formerly the Department of Geography) of Henan University, where he trained many young and middle-aged scholars. He is mainly engaged in the research of earth information science and agricultural information engineering. He is one of the academic leaders of agricultural and resource and environmental information engineering and a national expert with outstanding contributions. He has presided over and completed a number of national key projects and solved a series of key technologies. Among the 15 major achievements obtained, 11 have been awarded at or above the provincial and ministerial level, among which 4 have won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress award. In the 1980s, Professor Sun first proposed China's resource information management system and classification code, regional development model system, statistical spatial information system model, etc., making pioneering contributions to the application of information science in the resource environment. In the 1990s, he built the country’s first multi-variety large-area remote sensing yield estimation practical system, charge for the application of Chinese agricultural resources information system and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau scientific database, proposed the preliminary frame of virtual research environment of the resources and environment, etc. The application of information science and technology in agriculture and resource environment has moved to a new stage.
Professor Sun has published 11 monographs and more than 80 papers.
