Jiayao Wang

Wang Jiayao was born in Wuhan, Hubei province in May 1936. He is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the School of Geospatial Information at the University of Information Engineering. He is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He won the first “People’s Ladder Award” of the General Staff of the PLA, the National Outstanding scientific and technological workers and the PLA’s major Contribution Award of professional technology, and enjoyed the special government allowance. Professor Wang used to be a member of the Subject Assessment Group of academic Degrees Commission of the State Council, a member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the Military Product Finalization Commission of the Central Military Commission of the State Council, a member of the Council of The Chinese Society of Surveying and Mapping and chairman of the Cartography and GIS Professional Committee, and a member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the Final Assembly “810 project”. He is currently the Director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Geo-spherical Information Engineering and the Director of the Key Laboratory of Military Surveying, mapping and Navigation Engineering.

Professor Wang is engaged in cartography theory, digital cartography, military geographic information system and military surveying and mapping information grid. He was in charge of the establishment of China’s first major of computer cartography and military geographic information engineering, and led a team (including doctoral students) to complete the development of military geographic information systems at the strategic, operational (theater) and tactical levels, which have been widely applied. Professor Wang has won 1 first prize of national teaching achievement, 1 second and 1 second prize of military teaching achievement, 1 second prize of national defense science and technology, and 4 first prizes of military science and technology progress. He has published 15 academic works and teaching materials, among which 3 have won the first prize of national Outstanding Teaching Materials of Topographic in colleges and universities. In addition, he has published more than 150 academic papers. Professor Wang has supervised 54 master students and 65 doctor students successively, and one of his student’s graduation theses has won Excellent Master's Thesis of the PLA, three of his students’ graduation dissertations have won Excellent Doctoral Dissertations and one won National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Nomination. He supervised 8 postdoctoral fellows and trained a large number of high-level talents in topographic and geographic information technology for the country and the army. The teaching team he led was rated as the national teaching team, and the scientific research team was rated as the general staff and the Science and Technology Innovation team of Henan Province.
