Sun Jun is an engineering expert of tunnel and underground construction. His ancestral home is Shaoxing, Zhejiang province. And he was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu. Professor Sun graduated from The Civil Engineering Department of Jiaotong University in 1949. He is now a professor of Underground Construction Engineering at Tongji University. Professor Sun is also a pioneer in the field of tunnel and underground structure and set up e a new discipline in this field in 1960 – the Engineering Mechanics of Underground Structures. In addition, he conducts systematic studies in depth on some new disciplines, such as the viscoelastic-plastic theory of underground structures, geotechnical materials rheology and the anti-explosion dynamics of underground protective structures. Over the past ten years, he has also made considerable contribution to the innovation and progress in the application of engineering in urban environment and the theories and methods of soft science (focusing on intelligent science) in rock engineering. Since the 1980s, he has solved some key national scientific and technological conundrums as well as the projects of natural science funds and various major engineering projects, more than 40 in total. His research fruits have been applied to the practice of production. And great technical and economic benefits have been reaped. Professor Sun has trained dozens of master's and doctoral students. Since 1960, he has been in charge of the establishment of the first tunnel and underground construction engineering in Tongji University in China. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991.
